"But there was nothing about the little, low-rambling, more or less identical homes of Northumberland Estates to interest or to haunt, no chance of loot that would be any more than the ordinary, waking-world kind the cops hauled you in for taking; no small immunities, no possibilities for hidden life or otherworldly presence; no trees, secret routes, shortcuts, culverts, thickets that could be made hollow in the middle – everything in the place was right out in the open, everything could be seen at a glance; and behind it, under it, around the corners of its houses and down the safe, gentle curves of its streets, you came back, you kept coming back, to nothing; nothing but the cheerless earth."
Thomas Pynchon, "The Secret Integration"

This is Ian Mathers' Tumblr. I live in Canada. I've written about music and other things for Stylus, Dusted, PopMatters, Resident Advisor, the Village Voice, and a few other places. Hi.

Name: Ian
Age: 33
Selfies: I love selfies, I’m glad most people I know on here take selfies, but I Do Not Like most pictures of myself, so I don’t have a ton. Actually, I just was looking through some old pictures of me (like, pre-beard pictures) and I had the strongest and strangest sense of disassociation, like before I could stop my brain I thought “oh, that guy looks like so-and-so.” It took me a good few seconds to convince that part of my brain that I was actually looking at myself. I didn’t enjoy the experience. Anyway, here’s me in a nice shirt with Maximum Beard Density.

Favorites

Food: There are really too many I love in different but equally sincere ways, but Anaïs teases me about how consistently I want to eat shawarma so let’s go with that.
Drink: A really excellent gin and tonic is like nothing else in the world. That or nice, cold water.
Book: The Crying of Lot 49, partly (but not mostly) because it’s slim enough I can reread it regularly.
Favorite Author: I still need to read more by a lot of different people, but for now I’m pretty comfortable putting Patricia A. McKillip.
Movie: I had to go out and look at my DVD shelf for a second. I literally can’t decide between The Seventh Seal and Cukor’s Holiday. I’m not sure I’ve recovered from my first viewing of either yet.

Tv Show:
 Party Down

Band: I have Low and Joy Division/New Order tattoos. Too many others to mention/too afraid of boring regular readers with a predictable list of names.
Solo Artist: Do people really strongly distinguish between these? I like solo albums the same way I like bands.
Place: I really like Toronto, shockingly enough. I’ve only been to Scotland once, but I regularly think about going back.
School Subject: Philosophy (it’s not the band I hate, it’s their fans/not that there isn’t grounds for criticizing the discipline itself)
Sport: I haven’t played in years, but I remember really loving badminton. Soccer and tennis on TV.
Male Actor: I really like Adam Scott
Female Actor: Tatiana Maslany at the moment

Life

Siblings: Fraternal twin brother (I’m marginally older), younger sister
Dream Job: Music critic, I guess? More realistically (but still a dream), my current job but permanent and like 3x the pay.
Political Ideology: Not distillable down into one line without severe caricature. There’s a whole politics tag here for the curious though.
Religion: Private and mostly ineffable, to the extent that it exists
Tattoos: W.A.S.T.E. and muted posthorn on left wrist; twin brother production stamp on inside of right biceps; Chairkicker’s Union seal on back; Anaïs taco on left foot; heraldry from the original “Ceremony” single on back of right calf.
Piercings: none, never getting any
Languages: English, tiny bits of Spanish, rudimentary French

Tumblr

Reason Behind URL: It’s my friggin’ name.
Reason Behind Icon
: Whim the day I was setting tumblr up, I don’t like most pictures of my face, and I like continuity on here.

Why You Joined:
I’ve been blogging for years but I was feeling stagnant in my last one, couldn’t seem to write there anymore. Tumblr seemed (ha) lower impact. It has made my internet usage more active/less passive than it used to be, and it’s changed my life for the better in many ways.
First URL: Here, it’s always been imathers. Overall, my first one was “hiroshige,” which was literally a case of me looking around my dorm room in 2000 for a word I could use and having just bought a Great Wave Off Kanagawa print (yes, at a big print sale filled with equally predictable options).
# of Blogs: 2, if you count one I keep meaning to move over to tumblr and start updating again.

Tagging swooncityyy, of course, but I’d love to see people doing these in general and feel free to tag me if you do so after seeing this one!

staybehindtheyellowline:

imathers hope you like it! And of course, I apologize that this took so many months to get started on.
*If you’d like me to make you one, shoot me a message and I’ll put you on my list. Mutuals only please, simply because it’s easier for me to draw you when I feel we are somewhat acquainted with one another.

This is me now.

So, I know this has come up a few times recently, but today is actually a big make-or-break day for Anaïs and myself (photo of our wedding day above for reference). Any good thoughts you wanted to have for either/both of us from around 11 until, hmm, 2 or so would be hugely appreciated.

So yesterday we went to Guelph in the morning to have an amazing, home cooked birthday lunch for my mom, which also marked the first time I’ve seen my sister in person for months (she’s back for a visit) and the first time I’ve seen my newest nephew Jackson ever. We had a pretty good time. The caption on the last photo is what I said when they tried to get me out of the hammock.
